SAP/Danielson Group Training Overview

Educators gathered to review content from the Student Achievement Partner and Danielson Group training (blog post here) from September 25th and 26th.  The morning started with a chance to watch the Charlotte Danielson Keynote (video here) that launched a project coordinated between Washoe County, SAP and the Danielson Group. This was followed by looks at Core Actions 1 and 3 from the ELA/Literacy Instructional Practice Guides (IPG) and Core Action 4 from the K-2 ELA/Literacy IPG.

Personnel from Washoe’s Curriculum & Instruction department followed the ELA overview with specific looks at Core Actions 1 and 3 from the math IPGs.

The PowerPoint can be downloaded here and the resources from the SAP/Danielson Group training can be found here.

Design Principles of the Instructional Practice Guides

Katya Levitan-Reiner, Director of the Field Impact team at Student Achievement Partners, visited Washoe last week and presented on the Instructional Practice Guides (IPG) for educators in Reno. She outlined four key design principles including 1) The IPG’s are grounded in the shifts of the Common Core 2) were created to support teachers as they transition to the CCSS 3) are aligned with other tools and supports and 4) invite a shared responsibility and common language for administrators and central office as they support classrooms with the CCSS. The video, which can be accessed here, is important in making clear the intended use of the guides.

Resources from the SAP/Danielson Group Training

Student Achievement Partners, working with the Danielson Group, visited Reno and moved K-12 math and ELA/literacy educators through the Instructional Practice Guides and a number of supporting documents. Linked below are the resources used Wednesday and Thursday that allowed for a deeper understanding of text complexity, text-dependent questions, text-specific questions, the K-5 foundational skills, the instructional shifts and tools for planning pre and post observations. The video from the two days will be posted soon.

10 Reasons to Support the Core

Kentucky has created a guide for its community outlining why the state supports the Common Core. Although specifically made for Kentucky, the 10 points are applicable to all states working with the CCSS.  Among the reasons are the financial advantages including the fact that a great set of materials created in New York, Louisiana, Arizona or Montana are of equal value to all participating states.

Leveraging the talent in all 45 CCSS states towards one outcome is a boom to districts, with tight budgets, trying to make sure students are working with great resources. Many of those free and vetted materials are now linked here.

All Students Engaged in the Work of the Lesson

Core Action 3, within the Instructional Practice Guides, was the focus of Friday’s session with Implementation Specialist and instructional coaches. Educators worked through three pieces on content and in turn, working with site leadership, will select one item to share on October 2nd.

The three pieces include 1) a video of Lauren Resnick from the Institute of Learning, describing the importance of Accountable Talk 2) two structured conversation techniques–Talk Moves and Fishbowl and 3) a review of the Common Core Speaking and Listening standards.

The PowerPoint, with all of the links, and the handouts can be found below.

The New achievethecore.org

The nonprofit Student Achievement Partners has re-launched its website www.achievethecore.org.  The website is a smorgasbord of vetted and aligned Common Core resources for educators. As noted on the new landing page, “This website is full of free content designed to help educators understand and implement the Common Core State Standards. It includes practical tools designed to help students and teachers see their hard work deliver results. achievethecore.org was created in the spirit of collaboration. Please steal these tools and share them with others.”

There is a specific assessment section with questions matched to some of the close reading exemplars. For example, if you have been working with Winn-Dixie you will see an optional student mini-assessment with questions tagged with CCSS alignment. To find this resource, click here and click on the “Assessment Questions” in the frame to the left.

Pondiscio’s Challenge 2026

Although he doesn’t know it, Robert Pondiscio has been a huge part of Washoe’s efforts to implement the Common Core. As part of the district’s professional development launch on August 8th, Pondiscio, via Youtube content, made the case for why we should be developing a coherent body of knowledge with our students. Over 1000 of our classrooms peers have watched the video that can be accessed here and here.

Pondiscio has started a new effort titled, “Challenge 2026” with the following stated goal: By our nation’s 250th birthday all high-school graduates should be able to pass the U.S. Citizenship Test. There is a video describing the challenge and a website with commentary and resources at http://citizenshipfirst.us/.

Your Common Core Questions, Answered

During David Liben’s visit to Reno, he took some time to answer questions that educators in our community either emailed or posted on this blog. The questions are listed below with the link to the answers on Youtube. Liben, the Senior Content Specialist of the Literacy and English Language Arts team at Student Achievement Partners, also gave a short speech which will be posted soon.

I hear that by using a Common Core lesson, like BAP, I am hitting multiple standards and working with the shifts. I am also hearing that I need a specific plan to address all of a grade’s standards. If I do BAP and the close reading exemplars, do I still need a plan to address all of a grade’s standards? Answer

How will Guided Reading change with the Common Core State Standards? Or will it? Answer

In the Science Instructional Practice Guides, it says that lessons should focus on high quality texts. What if I’m doing a lab? Answer

What is the role of read alouds in the primary grades? How do we choose texts worth reading? Answer

What role does assessment play in this instructional shift?  Obviously, the ability to look at a piece of text holistically and authentically analyze text to reach a deeper understanding is not one that students will master within a week or two (unlike discrete skills-based instruction). So how do we fairly assess kids during the process in which they are looking at texts authentically and deeply again and again and again? Another, and possibly even more difficult question might be how do we assign grades to kids in reading when we are teaching kids in this manner? Answer

What are things teachers should be doing to get ready for SBAC? Answer

Close Reading: Strategies and Practice

Dr. Steven Gehrke, from the University of Nevada, Reno, led Washoe educators through strategies and practice to promote the habit of close reading. Attendees worked through several poems including Robert Frost’s Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening and The Tyger by William Blake. In addition, time was spent on the short story A Game of Catch by Richard Wilbur as well as linking all the work to the Common Core State Standards and the Instructional Practice Guides.

Administrative & Supervisory Meeting, September 13th

Close reading, Growth Mindset, and Core Actions 1 and 3, from the Instructional Practice Guides (IPG), were the focus on the most recent A&S meeting. Elementary principals applied the IPG with video of Washoe 3rd grade teacher Chris Hayes filmed by America Achieves. Administrators also engaged in a close reading of a piece by Carol Dweck on “Growth Mindset” and built their own professional leadership with work around Core Action 3 and the CCSS Implementation Guide from the National Association of Elementary School Principals. The PowerPoint and the handouts are linked below.
