First Person Account of Close Reading

In a piece for Teachers.net, English teacher Sarah Powley describes her experience with close reading. She matches here experience from when she started as a novice educator to a veteran in noting the limitations of the materials she was using and some of her pedagogical work. She writes:

The more I have read, these past few months, about “close reading,” the more familiar it has seemed to me. That’s because, in the very best of my literature lessons, that is what I had been working at for years.

What are Districts doing to Implement the CCSS?

In August, WestEd cosponsored a conference on the Common Core State Standards.  You can access video of presentations by Linda Darling-Hammond, David Liben, Bill Honig, and Kenji Kakuta here. A report, following the conference, was just released that describes what districts are doing to implement the CCSS. You can download the report here.

Several important themes emerge including making sure teachers are given enough professional development around the standards; tools and materials are aligned to the instructional shifts; and districts support the transition to the new assessment.

Shanahan on CCSS Policy (Webinar)

Text Project has posted a free webinar on the Common Core with CCSS Work Team member Dr. Timothy Shanahan (here).  Shanahan moves viewers through some familiar stuff including the genesis of CCSS and the “Big Changes to ELA.” The changes include: using more challenging text, greater use of informational text, greater attention to evidence, increased emphasis on disciplinary literacy and increased emphasis on close reading.

Of particular interest, to many readers of this blog, is what Shanahan has to say about professional development (minute 24:25). He notes that a “tremendous” amount of energy has been spent making sure students are reading in instructional level text. Consequently, many educators may not be prepared to have struggling students working with grade level text. Without strong and consistent PD to address this outcome, he outlines three likely scenarios. That is, 1) teachers will assign grade level text but children will not read it 2) teachers will read the text to the students and/or 3) teachers will simply tell students what the text says. Shanahan makes it clear that a “real investment” will have to be made so that educators are adequately prepared to make this shift in instruction; but he worries that states are not doing this.

Writing to Sources Training Materials

This week, fifth grade teacher teams, from Washoe’s 63 elementary schools, have been training on Shift 5: Writing to Sources.  The training, which addresses the NV-DOE required formative writing task, integrates discussion around the CCSS and SBAC rubrics as well as exploring a comprehensive writing lesson aligned with the BAP resource, “Black Cowboys, Wild Horses.”  Participants are encouraged to try the lesson and reflect upon their experience by joining the group “Formative Writing” and using code: spgtcm.

Appendix B Text Exemplar Links

Appendix B of the Common Core includes a list of Exemplar Texts. As the Appendix notes, the exemplars serve as “guideposts” for each grade band and are not a reading list. Canyons School District has taken the lists and linked to areas on the Internet where the titles are downloadable and free. Further, they tagged each selection with the reading level and Lexile level. You can find the list of 6th through 12th grade exemplar texts here.
